Wasteland Legend: The Immortal Ancient and the Old Raider

Once upon a time of golden knowledge and plenty, there was a rich man who feared death, and thus desired to live forever. He spent his fortune lavishly on brainboys and chemgirls, who set to concoct elixirs and remake his flesh. Eventually, they hit upon a formula for immortality, but warned their master that his reflexes would become slow and his virility shrivel, and even then he could be felled by violence like any other man. Triumphantly, the rich man paid the price, and became agelessly immortal.

Then the world of old shattered and dried up, and the immortal ancient hid himself alone in a small vault, where he could enjoy eternal life away from the strife and dangers of the world. Men were born and died from old age, time and time again, and as time passed by, the ancient one lived on, just as his medicos had promised.

One day, a grizzled, old Raider managed to break into an air shaft and sneak into the one-man vault, where he found the immortal ancient and his stockpiles and machines. The vault-dweller tried to soothen the greed and bloodlust of this veteran warrior and offered him the secret of immortality, telling the gnarled man of his own blessed existence without death, so unlike mortal men that he had become a god, free from the ravages of age and with all the learning of the ancients for him to savour. Sweet and alluring were his soft words, and the aching oldster listened in silence. How sweet would it not be to cheat Death himself and be rid of the scourge of old age? What a nectar to be rid of the brutish life of the wastelands! No need to raid, only to live. Why risk your life when you will never die?

Yet when the immortal ancient had finished speaking, the old Raider replied:

"You are a coward, and nothing more! You hide in the shadows of this tomb to prolong your existence without end. You are a ghost, for life you have not. Life is blood and strength. Life is the rush of battle and the bruising of flesh. Life is victory and the taking of loot. Life is breeding, and life is pain. Life is daring, and life is lust. What you know is not life, but the pale shadow of death. You speak of countless years without dying, yet when did you last best an enemy in combat and trample him into the ground? When did you last slay him and take his belongings? When did you last spear his woman with your manhood? All this, I have known, and only in moments of glory and pain do we truly live.

Nay, life you have not known! For the brave man dies but once, while the coward dies a thousand deaths over. This end is all the life you will ever know!"

So spake the old Raider, destroyed the immortality elixirs and tore apart the immortal ancient by blade and fist for his craven weakness. And only in those last moments of savage pain and spilled guts did the ancient one taste life at last, for life is not years, but deeds.
